Today, I just heard that SWTOR will in fact go free to play this coming fall. To me its a good thing because there are months I have had to go without a sub because I did not have the money to pay for the sub.I do not make a whole lot, but I do make some money. Going free to play is not a death sentence like a lot of people say that it is. If anything, most of these companies end up making more more because people buy what they want out of the cash shop. Free to play is becoming the norm as many of the subscription games out there have in fact gone free to bad.
STO went free to play about the same time this game was released.
There are times that you must unsubscribe for whatever reason it may be. In my case, its because I do not make enough money every month to pay for my sub. There are other things that I have to pay for like this website. Because I had to pay for one of my domain names, I had to give up on something. I really do love playing SWTOR and I would play more if I could. Its a nice change of pace for me from playing STO.
Tonight I cancelled my sub so that I do not forget to unsubscribe before tomorrow when I should get billed. I thought I would at least have a few more hours to play to get a bit leveled up. That did not happen. I do not have a max leveled character either.
For everyone out there, don’t unsubscribe until after you play for the last time before the new billing cycle starts. I contacted support but they told me to call them up. I don’t talk on the phones other than during the day when nobody is here.
One of the latest Q and A is out. http://www.swtor.com…april-27th-2012
One of the things that the community has been asking for is the ability to transfer characters. There is many reasons why people would want this. The server they may be on, they may not like that well for whatever reason it may be. Most likely because of low population. Some people play the game and don’t know that their friends are also playing. It does happen. Of course you want to play with them. Its easy for people to say reroll, but depending on the character class, its not always easy. I can’t see myself rerolling any of the force classes. They are a pain in the rear to reroll. Though, the other classes, I have have no problems rerolling.
Having said that come early summer, we will be able to do character transfers.
I remember when this game first came out, people were complaining about the queues. When any new game comes out, people want to play it. The newness goes away and not everyone wants to play it nearly as much as when the game originally came out. With MMOs, not everyone pays the subs every month. Some people can only play off and on. The thing is when the game came out, people were asking for more servers. Now people are asking for merging of servers. You cannot make everyone happy.
Not all MMOs have more than one server. I believe Eve is one and the other is STO. It would be interesting to know how they do it. Though I know STO has crashes from time to time.
I know it would be a latency issue, but they could mix it up a bit between US and Europe. They still would have to have the separate servers for PVP, PVE, RP, and PVP-RP. They would have to go farther by separating it by languages. In the end there will be less servers and more people to play with. Its nice though at times to be on a quiet server also as you do not have people stealing your mobs.
This is work in progress and is subject to change. If you are planning on being self sufficient, most people have alts to cover it. I’ve been playing around with the crew system for a while now. Something else to know is think about your companions on what their specs in regards to efficiency and crit.
Something I have recently been playing with is having a gathering character and I found it works a lot. I personally like to use archaelogy, scavenging and bioanalyis. Some people choose to leave one out and use slicing. I am usually concentrating on picking up the items rather than running the missions unless I have the credits to do so. Still here and there it really is good to run those missions.
Now the others characters, I will choose a crafting skill, slicing and then one of the mission skills. For the gatherer you will have to use the mail system quite often to mail the stuff to the right character that needs the items.
I was reading this link not that long ago: http://www.swtor.com…ad.php?t=267396
There is many reasons people play solo as was stated in the thread. Its not about being elite or anything like that. There are people who just like playing solo as they want to enjoy the story alone without being rushed or whatever it may be. There are people who have Real Life and don’t want to make people wait if they get called away. Many people are faced with that. I know I do. My mother loves to call me when I am playing the game as I do still live with her. There are a lot of people in similar situations.
Some people are too shy to ask for help even if they are in a guild. In this game, a guild can be a great thing if you need help as there will be missions you need help with or if you want to do flashpoints and heroics to take part in. From my experience and some of this comes from STO, is I prefer to get people from the guild rather than getting people from general chat. It has been my way as I have had better experience with the guild than going the other direction. I find a lot of the people in general chat are not so nice. A guild is there for a reason to help each other out. Use it.
Tonight, I was able to unlock my legacy on Hydarian Way. It was about time that I did as its been a while. The name I really wanted was not available. I am not using the surname option but the Legacy look so my one character from the RP perspective can still have the same last name that I wanted, but know that she comes from a legacy. Each of my characters can be related, but not have the last name. I ended up choosing Winters as the Legacy. In the upcoming Blog entries, I will probably be trying to write this all out. I have some Sith side characters on the server, but I think I am going to remove them as it just does not make sense from this type of perspective.
I have two more servers to get characters to the Legacy. I can tell you it was a pain in the behind to get to this point. The mission I had to do to unlock it was really hard. I am not sure if all of the classes are like that, but we will see. At least now i know what to do when it comes to the classes.
I was trying to level yet another character as I was going to go Jedi Shadow. I managed to get to level 5. Tomorrow, hopefully I will get to level 10 or better. Having said that, in the past you were able to go to the Republic fleet or the equivalent on the other side. I was going to do that with my character. Apparently that had changed it. People were probably taking advantage of it. I never thought it was a bad thing, but apparently they did so they changed it so we can’t go there early. What is the harm really? Its nice having a head start, but I am not going to dwell on it as we get to other planets, we can work on our crew skills.
Typically when you hit level 10, when you get off the starting worlds for each of your characters and go to either republic or empire fleet, you get to choose your crew skills. They can consist of crafting, gathering and mission skills. The max amount of skills you can choose is 3. Most people will choose one of each, but there are some that will pick up just gathering skills or mix it up with gathering and mission skills. There may even be people who mix it up with mission skills but it’s advised not to do that. The one skill, you can’t have is all three to be crafting skills. That is the way the system is set up.
I have a total of 8 characters. Four of them are Republic and 4 of them are empire. You can’t mail items from your empire to republic and vice versa otherwise, I would have. There is a max of 8 characters per server so there is a bit more restrictions when it comes to what you can do. I won’t do 8 of each for two servers. I rather play on one server if I can.
I am digressing just a tad here. My point here is if you don’t want to duplicate skills here, you are going to have to use the mail system to help you out. Having alts can be helpful here to fit some of your needs but not all depending on how you do it.
There is a total of 6 crafting skills which include: Bichem, artifice, cybertech, armstech, sythweaving, armormech. There is 4 gathering skills to choose from which is: slicing, bioanalysis, scavenging, and archaeology. In addition there is 4 missions to choose from which is diplomacy, underworld trading, treasure hunting and investigation.
I did a mirror decision on my 4 characters on each side. I chose 4 crafting skills out of the 6. I went with Biochem, Artifice, Armstech and Cybertech. I thought these were the most valueable crafting skills for me. That meant that I would have to rely on picking up the drops to have better armor. That really is not so bad as not all skills are usable to all classes. I am only losing out in two skills which is not to bad since I am running 4 characters per side. Because I did not want to duplicate any of my gathering skills, I went with slicing on my smuggler and went the same way on the Sith side with the equivalent. What that means is that I would have to share some of my gathering skills stuff that I gather with these toons. I would have to do it anyways as I would have to share some of the items I make between toons.
Because of that, I am not going to level up my toons so quickly so as to maximize my toons and make sure they are geared well in regards to crew skills.
Like all MMOs, there are usually weekly patches to keep the game running smoothly. Sometimes there are more if there are problems with the current patch. People complain about when they are performed. For some people, you may not even know that there was a patch until you logged into the game as they do it while you are sleeping but yet others it may be going on during their play time. They can’t please everyone and I understand why they want to do it at one time rather than doing them at multiple times. It easier and easier to keep track of.
This is a new game so there is a lot of bug fixes and tweaks to the game, but patches are always ongoing as they will find problems or they add something to the game.
